  2. Multi-strategy and hybrid funds took the bulk of new capital, with net inflows of $15.4 billion and $12.3 billion; funds of funds added $5.7 billion.
  3. For advisors and allocators reviewing hedge fund exposure, the concentration above $10 billion and the quarter's $39.9 billion redemption total are the two capacity and liquidity numbers to reconcile with client cash needs.

Hedge funds took in $36 billion of net new money in the third quarter, pushing 2026 inflows well over $100 billion, according to Citco's Quarterly Hedge Fund Report. Opalesque reported the administrator's figures on Oct. 27; the quarter came in just below the $39.1 billion gathered in Q2.

Multi-strategy and hybrid funds took the bulk of new capital, with net inflows of $15.4 billion and $12.3 billion; funds of funds added $5.7 billion. Gross subscriptions for the quarter totalled $75.9 billion, which implies roughly $39.9 billion of redemptions across the three months. Citco's report says other strategies drew smaller net inflows or posted outflows.

For advisors and allocators reviewing hedge fund exposure, the concentration above $10 billion and the quarter's $39.9 billion redemption total are the two capacity and liquidity numbers to reconcile with client cash needs. Funds above the $10 billion tier took $24.9 billion, or about 70% of net inflows, leaving roughly 30% for smaller funds. The largest funds gathered $26.7 billion in the second quarter, when total net inflows were $39.1 billion, so concentration at the top held even as the quarterly pool shrank.

September alone produced $28.8 billion of subscriptions, the quarter's highest, against $18.5 billion of redemptions, up from $10.3 billion in August. Net inflows were $10.3 billion for the month, the quarter's weakest, after $14.1 billion in July and $11.6 billion in August. The three monthly figures sum to the $36 billion quarterly total.

Declan Quilligan, who heads hedge fund services at Citco Fund Services (Ireland), described the quarter as "nothing out of the ordinary", according to Opalesque, and said investors will naturally review portfolios after a period of strong returns. The next quarterly report will show whether September's higher redemptions carried into the fourth quarter.
