Google plans $15 billion for Malaysian data centers through 2028

The investment funds campuses in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan plus 1GW of clean energy, on top of a $2 billion 2024 pledge.

At a glance

  1. The $15 billion is 7.5 times the $2 billion Google committed to Malaysia in 2024.
  2. For allocators underwriting Malaysian data center exposure, the pledge is as much a power and water program as a building program.
  3. Google says it will bring 1GW of clean energy capacity to the country's grid.

Google plans to invest $15 billion in Malaysian data centers during 2027 and 2028, funding new computing hubs along with water and power infrastructure, Data Center Dynamics reported.

The $15 billion is 7.5 times the $2 billion Google committed to Malaysia in 2024. The work centers on the existing Elmina Business Park in Selangor. New campuses are planned in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, with construction running through 2027 and 2028.

For allocators underwriting Malaysian data center exposure, the pledge is as much a power and water program as a building program.

Google says it will bring 1GW of clean energy capacity to the country's grid. Earlier this week it committed $160 million to shared water infrastructure in Negeri Sembilan to support its planned data center there.

A 200-MW uprate at the Salem nuclear plant would support a nuclear power purchase agreement with Google, as Private Wealth Daily previously reported. A campus with dedicated generation and a water arrangement is a different asset from a merchant build competing for the same grid connection.

Google bought 389 acres at Port Dickson in Negeri Sembilan in May last year. It intends to build a data center about 90km south of Kuala Lumpur on the Strait of Malacca. The Port Dickson site's capacity is reported at between 500MW and 1GW, with Gamuda Engineering handling engineering and infrastructure works.

The first phase of the Elmina campus is expected to have 100MW of capacity and is slated for completion sometime this year. Google broke ground there in October 2024.

Google expects the projects to support more than 9,000 local jobs a year, including technicians, mechanical and electrical engineers, logistics and security managers.
