GenusPlus wins a USD 94m construction contract on an Australian wind farm

A Renewables Now report gives the price but no project name, capacity, developer or grid arrangements.

At a glance

  1. The coverage names no project, developer, state or capacity, and no scope of work—whether balance of plant, turbines, civil works or the connection.
  2. Connection is what this desk has followed in Australia, and a construction award on a wind farm whose grid arrangements go unmentioned carries the same open question.
  3. The pattern is not confined to Australia.

The construction contract GenusPlus won on an Australian wind farm arrived with a USD 94m price and, per the Renewables Now report dated October 5, almost nothing else. The coverage names no project, developer, state or capacity, and no scope of work—whether balance of plant, turbines, civil works or the connection. Without a megawatt figure, USD 94m cannot be translated into dollars per megawatt installed, the number a lender underwrites, and without the owner's name there is nothing to check the contract against: no offtake terms, financiers or construction timetable.

Connection is what this desk has followed in Australia, and a construction award on a wind farm whose grid arrangements go unmentioned carries the same open question. Our September reporting covered a renewable zone in Victoria that was dropped with no reason, no project list and no capacity figure, leaving developers holding land to carry the connection risk themselves, and a $76m public grant that funds solar economics at a moment when the scarce asset has shifted to the permission to connect.

The pattern is not confined to Australia. A EUR5bn tie-up between Masdar and Luxcara arrived with no capacity, counterparty or structure; a Texas hybrid park named its partners and a state but nothing that would price it; a GBP 5m investment in the Scottish floating-wind supply chain named a company, a country and a sum while omitting the site or the counterparty. Greencoat Renewables' EUR 11.9m half-year profit was filed as evidence on renewables margins, with nothing attached that would let anyone test it. GenusPlus's award differs in one respect: it carries a number.

A contract price, though, values one slice of a build, leaving the owner's cost of capital, the offtake terms and the merchant tail outside the frame. The blank column in energy announcements has become a financing tactic, moving merchant risk onto lenders and counterparties; here the blanks are the project's identity and its capacity, with the price the one thing standing. Whether USD 94m is a large contract or a small one depends on megawatts the report does not state and a developer it does not name.
