GE Vernova books Supernode 3 equipment order, price not disclosed

The 260-MW storage order moves Supernode 3 forward; the report says nothing about how it will be paid for.

At a glance

  1. The order is for Supernode 3, a 260-MW battery energy storage system.
  2. Storage returns live on the spread between equipment cost and the price of shifted megawatt-hours.
  3. Supernode 3 lands in a week when storage economics are being re-priced in public.

On August 21, Renewables Now reported that GE Vernova has taken an equipment order. The order is for Supernode 3, a 260-MW battery energy storage system. The dispatch names the vendor, project, and size, with little else. It does not say what equipment the order covers, what it is worth, who owns the project, or where it sits.

Storage returns live on the spread between equipment cost and the price of shifted megawatt-hours. Neither side appears in the dispatch. For someone reading the capital stack, the order is a schedule marker, not a financing event. It says the project is moving toward delivery. It does not say who wrote the equity or priced the debt.

An order without a price

Supernode 3 lands in a week when storage economics are being re-priced in public. PWD's same-day coverage included the DOE's $500 million commitment. The money is spread across seven battery projects. TVA has also introduced a new $1.5 million per megawatt capacity charge on data center connections. Federal money and utility pricing are both moving, and equipment vendors stay busy while project finance details remain out of view.

On the logistics side, the order says the project has moved into procurement. Delivery and commissioning at this scale take months, so Supernode 3's capital stack is likely already assembled or close to it. Contract value, offtake, and ownership are all absent. Each of those would size the deal in a way the equipment order cannot. A construction financing notice or a grid connection filing would provide them. Until one lands, Supernode 3 exists in the record as an order.
