Fisher's $4 billion Treasury ETF swap hands advisors a duration check

The Fisher-linked flows arrived before the Treasury's surprise buyback announcement and give advisors reason to revisit duration with 30-year yields at their highest since 2007.

At a glance

  1. The Plano, Texas manager pulled almost the same amount from the iShares 7-10 Year Treasury Bond fund (IEF).
  2. The flows show how one large wealth manager can swing billions in the Treasury market.
  3. The shift came before Wednesday's surprise announcement that the Treasury is expanding buybacks of long-dated debt — Wealth Advisor Daily covered the move — which pushed 30-year yields down 10 basis points.

Fisher Investments looks to be the buyer behind a record $4 billion inflow into BlackRock's 20-year-plus Treasury ETF, according to Bloomberg data reviewed by AdvisorHub. The Plano, Texas manager pulled almost the same amount from the iShares 7-10 Year Treasury Bond fund (IEF). The swap lengthened duration just as 30-year yields touched their highest level since 2007.

The flows show how one large wealth manager can swing billions in the Treasury market. "It would appear some model of theirs went longer on duration," Todd Sohn, chief ETF strategist at Baird Strategas, told AdvisorHub. "Nobody else can move those funds in size like that."

The shift came before Wednesday's surprise announcement that the Treasury is expanding buybacks of long-dated debt — Wealth Advisor Daily covered the move — which pushed 30-year yields down 10 basis points. Whether the positioning was a deliberate call or a model rebalancing, it caught a policy turn in the long end.

The evidence points to Fisher because of scale. The firm held about $15 billion in IEF as of end-June, by far the largest position of any holder. That scale made it the only investor that could produce a $4 billion outflow, according to Bloomberg's holdings data. A Fisher spokesperson cited fiduciary duty in declining to comment on individual securities, and BlackRock declined to comment.

The trade is a small piece of Fisher's $441 billion in assets, and ETF flows do not show the firm's full positioning. Even so, the episode is a reminder to advisors. With 30-year yields at two-decade highs, duration needs a deliberate review. One manager's rebalancing, or one policy announcement, can move the long end by 10 basis points in a day. Have the conversation with clients now, and make sure their portfolios hold the duration they think they hold.
