Ether ETFs shed $400 million as the token gains

Three sessions of redemptions in a rising ether market thin the funds' 30-day cushion to a quarter of the month's gain, while Zcash's single U.S. fund books its best session of the month.

At a glance

  1. Redemptions that arrive while the asset appreciates are a decision about the vehicle, and the flow data cannot say why, though it can show the ether funds' 30-day cushion thinning: they remain more than $1.5 billion ahead over that window, so three sessions have given back something like a quarter of the month's net gain.
  2. XRP funds lost about $5 million, handing back their small inflow from the day before, while the single U.S. Zcash fund took in nearly $47 million — its strongest showing in a month that has brought it more than $230 million, one session worth roughly a fifth of the month's haul.
  3. The macro tape explains some of it.

The ether funds have now shed money for three sessions running: roughly $39 million of net outflows on Thursday, after about $224 million on Wednesday and $141 million on Tuesday, according to SoSoValue figures cited by CoinDesk — some $400 million out of one wrapper category in three days, during which ether itself rose 2% to about $2,470.

The bitcoin funds, meanwhile, took in roughly $159 million on Thursday — the largest daily take among the four products in this report — and stand nearly $2.5 billion ahead on the month.

Rotation money, not allocation money

The macro tape explains some of it. A day before these flows, the Fed raised rates for the first time since 2023; oil fell and equities and bonds rallied together, the S&P 500 up about 1% for its biggest advance in six weeks, the Nasdaq 100 up nearly 2%, and the 10-year Treasury yield snapping an eight-day rising streak. CoinDesk reads that as cheaper crude taking the top off the inflation problem the rate rise was meant to address, and reports that crypto moved with the equity tape all week rather than ahead of it.

The Zcash fund's month deserves more attention than its size suggests, because Zcash was up 10% to about $1,488 and led the majors again, and the only U.S. fund for an asset having a run like that is where the ETP expression of the trade shows up first. Creations concentrated in a one-fund category are performance-chasing; treating them as a rotation into privacy assets mistakes a month of price action for a strategy.

The test comes quickly. If the Zcash fund keeps creating on days the ether and XRP funds are redeeming, the tail of the complex has a marginal buyer and the big-two flows stop being the whole picture; if the creations dry up as soon as zcash's run cools, then $47 million was momentum parked in the only U.S. wrapper for the token, and ether's three-day, $400 million exit is the number that lasts.
