Police say drone struck Moldova communications tower; services uninterrupted

President Maia Sandu said four Russian drones violated Moldovan airspace and at least one exploded in the north.

At a glance

  1. Despite the collision, communications services were not disrupted, the police service said.
  2. The strike landed inside a week of airspace intrusions.
  3. President Maia Sandu condemned the airspace violations and said the Russia-Ukraine war threatens Europe.

Moldova's police force confirmed in a Telegram post that a drone struck a communications tower near the village of Girbovets on the morning of September 30, and that officers recovered multiple fragments of an unmanned aerial vehicle within a radius of roughly 265 meters, among them components of the airframe, control system, power supply and propulsion system. Despite the collision, communications services were not disrupted, the police service said.

The strike landed inside a week of airspace intrusions. Moldova borders Ukraine, which has been in conflict with Russia since February 2022, and drones have been used by both sides to attack communications infrastructure during the war. Over that same stretch Russia struck several sites and data centers in Kyiv with drones, according to Data Center Dynamics, and Ukrainian media reported that those strikes violated the airspace of both Moldova and Romania, with drones reportedly falling in the territory of each country. Romania also recorded drone crashes during the week.

President Maia Sandu condemned the airspace violations and said the Russia-Ukraine war threatens Europe. Four Russian drones violated Moldovan airspace and at least one exploded in the north, she said, per UA.news. The coverage does not establish whether the explosion she described and the collision police documented at Girbovets are the same event, and the police post describes fragments of an unmanned aerial vehicle without naming its origin.

What the Kyiv data-center strikes add

A communications tower is the forgiving asset in this story. This one took a direct hit, scattered debris across a quarter of a kilometer and kept carrying traffic, which is a failure an owner of dispersed, repairable structures is built to absorb.

A data center is assembled on a different set of assumptions, and the reporting from Kyiv does not describe what the drones did to the facilities that were struck. Cooling, power and generator systems that keep a server hall running sit largely outside whatever hardened envelope the building itself provides, and a single site concentrates far more capital into one footprint than a tower does.

For an investor holding towers, fiber and server halls across one portfolio, the Girbovets incident is a reminder that the risk sits unevenly across them. The 265-meter fragment field describes an event a tower owner could absorb; nothing in the coverage yet puts a number on the same event at a data center, which is the figure a diligence file would rather have.
