Defiance's ISRL goes local where Israel ETFs go global

The new fund tracks Tel Aviv-listed names instead of Israel-heavy multinationals, turning a country ETF into a direct local-market wager.

At a glance

  1. The strategy occupies the single-nation segment of the ETF shelf, the pocket investors use for ex-U.S. diversification or an outright country bet, and Defiance is positioning ISRL to look past global scrutiny of controversy tied to Israel and focus on the underlying local economy, per ETF Trends.
  2. ISRL's differentiator is where its stocks live.
  3. VettaFi is the index provider and receives an index licensing fee, though ISRL is not issued, sponsored, endorsed, or sold by VettaFi — a relationship investors have seen before in the country-leverage shelf, where BMO and REX Shares brought six notes to market in August, each targeting three times a VettaFi index's daily move.

ETF Trends reports that Defiance ETFs has launched the Defiance KSM Israel 120 (ISRL) ETF, a single-country fund designed to track the Israel 120 iNDEX and hold the top 120 Israeli companies; the launch note does not state the fund's expense ratio.

The case leans on fundamentals: Israel leads the OECD in R&D intensity, and its demographic growth is strong by the standards of developed tech markets. Yaron Dayagi, deputy head of VettaFi's Tel Aviv office, describes the Israeli equity market's 'remarkable resilience' and calls the index a direct gateway to that durability.

ISRL's differentiator is where its stocks live. Rival Israel strategies, per ETF Trends, may deliver exposure through Israel-heavy global firms; ISRL instead emphasizes companies in the country, looking for listings on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange. That distinction is the whole trade: a single-country fund that fills its book with multinationals is partly a global-equity fund, while a fund restricted to Tel Aviv listings is a direct wager on the local index, its currency, and its sector mix. The purity is the product, and it is also the risk: the same local focus that sets ISRL apart strips out some of the global diversification that rival strategies may embed.

That launch, and this one, land as this publication has argued the shelf is already full: August's $150 billion inflow put year-to-date volume near $1.4 trillion, and every new launch adds to that crowded shelf.

For investors who want Israel, the choice comes down to a global tech fund with an Israeli accent or the local market itself, and ISRL is unambiguously the latter. The fee, once published, will say what Defiance thinks that purity is worth — and whether local-only construction can compete with the global-blend approach on price.
