Copper's data-center rally needs a small sleeve

The AI-driven copper thesis runs to 2040, but the only liquid fund carries roll and K-1 friction, so keep the satellite at 1% to 3%.

At a glance

  1. The run is built on a supply-demand story that extends past the usual cycle, with S&P Global projecting demand will climb 50% to 42 million metric tons by 2040 while supply trails by 10 million tons.
  2. Advisors then have to choose how to express the trade, and physical copper, the purest form, brings storage costs, insurance, security risks, and an illiquid retail market with wide bid-ask spreads, so few clients will want to take delivery of copper sheets for a portfolio sleeve.
  3. The practical route for most accounts is the United States Copper Index Fund (CPER), a $750 million copper futures fund up 14% this year, but it is not a spot copper proxy.

Copper trades above $14,300 a ton on the London Metal Exchange, up 15% this year and 45% over the past twelve months, according to Financial Advisor Magazine. The run is built on a supply-demand story that extends past the usual cycle, with S&P Global projecting demand will climb 50% to 42 million metric tons by 2040 while supply trails by 10 million tons. The buyers are data centers, power grids, and electric vehicles, and the multi-decade math is what makes the commodity thesis worth a look as AI buildout accelerates construction.

Advisors then have to choose how to express the trade, and physical copper, the purest form, brings storage costs, insurance, security risks, and an illiquid retail market with wide bid-ask spreads, so few clients will want to take delivery of copper sheets for a portfolio sleeve. Jon Lapp, founder of Haven Financial Advisors, puts the dedicated copper allocation at 1% to 3% of a portfolio, with 5% as the upper bound for a high-risk client. That sizing treats the metal as a satellite holding and respects the volatility of a commodity that has already run hard. It keeps the position small enough to be wrong without damaging the portfolio while still offering a kick if the supply deficit plays out.

The practical route for most accounts is the United States Copper Index Fund (CPER), a $750 million copper futures fund up 14% this year, but it is not a spot copper proxy. The fund periodically rolls expiring futures contracts, and the structure of the futures market means it can incur costs while doing so, causing its return to diverge from the spot price. CPER is also a commodity partnership, so investors get a Schedule K-1 at tax time, which can complicate annual reporting for clients and advisors alike.

For now CPER is the only liquid fund in the space. That leaves the trade a deliberate compromise: pay the K-1 and rolling costs, or sit out a demand story that runs to 2040. Watch whether the fund's returns can stay close enough to spot over a multi-year hold to justify even a small sleeve.
