Colorado pension commits $20m to Aldine private capital fund

The oversubscribed SBIC close and the small pension check show where private credit formation still clears.

At a glance

  1. Alternative Credit Investor reported the commitment, which appeared in an investment update discussed at the pension's 20 August board meeting.
  2. Aldine closed the fund last month at $308m in commitments, oversubscribed.
  3. FPPA disclosed the private-debt check alongside commitments to private equity and special situations, per the update.

Fire and Police Pension Association of Colorado committed $20m to Aldine Capital Fund V, a small business investment company that writes subordinated debt and equity checks to lower-middle-market US companies. Alternative Credit Investor reported the commitment, which appeared in an investment update discussed at the pension's 20 August board meeting.

Aldine closed the fund last month at $308m in commitments, oversubscribed. The Chicago-based firm has raised more than $1bn across five funds since 2005 and completed more than 90 portfolio investments. The vehicle targets companies backed mainly by independent sponsors, so deals come in smaller increments and are less likely to be auctioned to the highest bidder. A manager who knows the sponsor can underwrite on direct relationship rather than on price.

FPPA disclosed the private-debt check alongside commitments to private equity and special situations, per the update. It landed the same week this publication reported allocators pushing private-debt dollars toward Asia-Pacific, another indication of the same rotation.

A $20m ticket does not move a market. It is still a useful reading on where a slice of pension money is going: a niche SBIC in the lower-middle market closes oversubscribed, and a public safety pension writes into it. That matches the split in private credit — managers with defined strategies and identifiable cash-flow profiles are clearing their raises, while generalist direct lending funds face a harder market. Watch whether other small pensions follow FPPA into vehicles like this; that would show whether the appetite is durable.
