Civo plans 40 UK edge data centers, starting with 8MW in Hertfordshire

Civo has secured five more sites totaling 150MW and says the remaining build-out runs three years, without disclosing how the sites will be powered or whether it builds or leases them.

At a glance

  1. The sites are intended to run sovereign AI compute, with Nvidia's Vera Rubin NVL72 systems named as the hardware and direct-to-chip liquid cooling specified to support it, a level of hardware detail that sits oddly beside the silence on how the sites get built.
  2. Civo has secured five further locations in Lancashire, Greater Manchester, London, and Oxfordshire offering a combined 150MW, with the remaining sites planned over the next three years.
  3. What the coverage does not say is how the sites will be powered, or whether Civo builds them itself or leases from other operators, and that gap carries weight for a program whose six named locations total 188MW at full build-out.

Civo says it will build 40 edge data centers across the UK, starting with an 8MW Hertfordshire facility that is already being fitted out and designed to scale to 38MW, Data Center Dynamics reports. The sites are intended to run sovereign AI compute, with Nvidia's Vera Rubin NVL72 systems named as the hardware and direct-to-chip liquid cooling specified to support it, a level of hardware detail that sits oddly beside the silence on how the sites get built.

Civo has secured five further locations in Lancashire, Greater Manchester, London, and Oxfordshire offering a combined 150MW, with the remaining sites planned over the next three years. Hertfordshire's eventual 38MW plus that 150MW puts 188MW across six named locations, a footprint that reads as colocation rather than edge.

What the coverage does not say is how the sites will be powered, or whether Civo builds them itself or leases from other operators, and that gap carries weight for a program whose six named locations total 188MW at full build-out. Grid access has become an underwriting variable in its own right, as this publication has argued, and load on that scale is negotiated with network operators long before it is negotiated with tenants.

Earlier this year Civo announced a partnership with Era4, pairing Era4's data center network with Civo's cloud software to build a sovereign AI cloud platform in the UK; Era4 was said at the time to hold more than 40 brownfield and industrial sites across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Civo's plan runs to 40 sites, a similarity in counts that is suggestive and unconfirmed, and the reporting does not connect the two.

No enterprise or hyperscaler tenant is named in the plans. Civo is both the operator and the intended user, which puts a vendor-financed program in different company than a pre-let hyperscale campus. Mark Boost, Civo's chief executive, frames the plan around talent: Britain has it, and the infrastructure to match has to exist physically, in the country, close to the organizations using it, because policy commitments are not a substitute for compute, cooling and density. He adds that a UK footprint gives overseas organizations a compliant home for their services and data.

Hertfordshire is not a large data center market, though it hosts a Google facility that opened in September last year and an Equinix project under development. Watch whether the Era4 portfolio turns out to supply the footprint behind the 40 sites, and whether a named tenant appears before Hertfordshire reaches 38MW.
