CIP's credit platform leads equity in Antora's 5.8 GWh Kansas battery

Grok Ventures and University Pension Plan Ontario joined the CIP-led third-party equity; Antora also announced an offtake to supply Pratt Energy beginning in 2027.

At a glance

  1. The project is anticipated to become one of the largest battery storage systems in the world once completed.
  2. The 5.8 gigawatt-hour figure sizes the battery; the announced use is heat delivered continuously to one biorefinery, and the customer is also the site's owner.
  3. The technology is what the contract hangs on.

Antora Energy has announced plans for a 5.8 GWh thermal battery storage project at renewable fuel producer Pratt Energy's biorefinery in Pratt, Kansas, with the third-party equity financing led by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners through the firm's credit platform investments and participation from Australian climate investor Grok Ventures and University Pension Plan Ontario. The project is anticipated to become one of the largest battery storage systems in the world once completed.

Two announcements arrived together. Alongside the project, Antora announced an offtake agreement to supply around-the-clock energy to Pratt Energy from the battery beginning in 2027; the announcement does not say whether the equity financing was conditioned on that contract, and it discloses nothing about the amount raised, the ownership split among the three equity backers, or the offtake's terms, volumes and duration. The 5.8 gigawatt-hour figure sizes the battery; the announced use is heat delivered continuously to one biorefinery, and the customer is also the site's owner.

The technology is what the contract hangs on. Founded in 2018 and based in California, Antora develops thermal batteries that store low-cost electricity as heat in insulated blocks of solid carbon and release it around the clock as industrial heat or power. Under the offtake, that heat goes continuously to the biorefinery, which the companies say will improve Pratt's operational efficiency and product competitiveness and support its push toward producing 100% zero-carbon-intensity ethanol.

Equity out of the credit sleeve

That the lead check sat inside CIP's credit platform is the structural detail the announcement supplies without explaining, and read as inference rather than stated rationale, contracted cash flow from a single industrial buyer likely weighed more heavily in the underwriting than the technology's upside. Reiner Boehning, a partner at CIP, said Antora had shown sound technology, compelling economic fundamentals and a clear path to repeatable deployment at scale, which gave the firm the conviction to partner on the project.

Antora's co-founder and chief commercial officer, David Bierman, described the project as meeting Kansas's rising energy demand without increasing power bills for homes or businesses, and as creating jobs and local investment without straining the resources the community depends on. Deliveries are due to begin in 2027. Until the heat reaches the biorefinery, the disclosed facts leave one technology, one contract and one counterparty carrying the equity, since the announced output is spoken for by an industrial buyer whose own efficiency and ethanol economics the project is meant to improve.
