Churchill launches capital solutions strategy with King Street hire

The Nuveen unit's new desk for customized financing shows where Churchill expects demand as direct lending volume sags.

At a glance

  1. The Nuveen Private Capital subsidiary has hired the former head of capital solutions at King Street to lead a new strategy providing senior and junior private debt to companies with customized financing needs, Creditflux first reported.
  2. Creditflux's report does not name the executive, set a target size, or give a first-close date.
  3. The launch arrives in a quarter that gives lenders reason to broaden their offerings.

Churchill is moving into capital solutions, and it went to King Street to find the person to run it. The Nuveen Private Capital subsidiary has hired the former head of capital solutions at King Street to lead a new strategy providing senior and junior private debt to companies with customized financing needs, Creditflux first reported.

Creditflux's report does not name the executive, set a target size, or give a first-close date. It does establish the intent: a dedicated Churchill desk for bespoke financings, a product that sits between a plain senior loan and a structured credit deal.

The launch arrives in a quarter that gives lenders reason to broaden their offerings. Private Credit Daily's tracking shows US direct lending volume ran below half its first-quarter pace in the second quarter. That same month brought news of Palmer Square exploring a sale, BlackRock TCP moving nearly half its BDC portfolio into a continuation vehicle, and PGIM taking full control of Deerpath. Churchill's answer is to build a new product line, not retrench.

A hire from a rival

The hire matters as much as the strategy. King Street runs a capital solutions practice, and the person moving to Churchill led it. Pulling a competitor's head of a targeted business into your own shop is a faster route into the niche than assembling a team from scratch, and it carries an implicit endorsement of the strategy.

Fund Watch readers will care about structure, and the coverage does not say how the strategy will be housed. Churchill could put it in a dedicated closed-end fund, attach it to an existing commingled vehicle, or run it through a BDC. Each structure changes the pace of deployment, the fee profile, and the kind of LP it suits. Creditflux's report says only that the strategy will provide senior and junior debt to companies needing custom financing.

The move sets Churchill apart from the consolidation churn around it. Palmer Square was weighing a sale in the same month, BlackRock TCP moved nearly half its BDC portfolio into a continuation vehicle, and PGIM took full control of Deerpath, as Private Credit Daily has reported. Those transactions answer questions about scale or exit. Churchill is answering a question about product scope.

What such a strategy needs above all is deal flow. Churchill is betting its new hire can find it, even as the usual sources of such deals have slowed. The structure and the target will come later. Whether the borrowers show up is the open question.
