Central Georgia EMC plans 50-MW home battery fleet as data centers seek grid access

Base Power will install and maintain the residential batteries in its first utility partnership outside Texas.

Central Georgia Electric Membership Corp. plans a 50-MW home battery deployment to reduce system peaks and energy costs, as hyperscale data centers seek to connect to its grid, Utility Dive reported.

Base Power installs and maintains the residential batteries at little or no direct cost to the homeowner. Base or its utility partners charge and discharge them to shave demand peaks, mitigate price spikes and capture arbitrage value. Base says each 39.2-kWh battery can supply up to 36 hours of backup during an outage, and that its fleet has more than 750 MWh of capacity across 30,000-plus homes.

The CGEMC partnership is Base's first outside Texas and one of its first in a regulated utility market. Base is also partnering with El Paso Electric, a vertically integrated utility serving parts of far west Texas outside the deregulated ERCOT market, on a resilience-focused pilot.

Where the money comes from shifts by market, spokesperson Gabriel Federman said in an email. "In Texas, that means addressing transmission and energy costs through peak-shaving and arbitrage. In Georgia, the main value is in transmission and reducing capacity obligations." Federman said the core principles of distributed storage hold across both.

A September analysis by consultancy ICF, cited in the article, found that distributed battery storage offers value beyond the wholesale level by alleviating distribution grid congestion, boosting local resilience and allowing utilities to defer grid upgrades.

A retail model moving into regulated territory

Base sells home batteries through energy-choice retail frameworks in restructured markets such as Texas and the Illinois zone of PJM Interconnection, and through direct partnerships with public power entities in parts of Texas, according to the report. The cooperative deal tests whether the same discounted-subscription structure travels into a regulated utility market where the offtaker is a member-owned co-op rather than a competitive retailer.
