Burgum lauds LG battery plant as DOE cancels corridors

A cabinet endorsement doesn't substitute for missing capacity, offtake, and grid numbers.

At a glance

  1. On one side, LG Energy Solution is starting up one of the largest battery-cell plants in the United States.
  2. The dispatch leaves out the numbers that would make sense of the moment: the plant's planned gigawatt-hours, LG's investment, the incentives it received, and the identities of the power and offtake holders.
  3. The split-screen widens with the day's other energy news.

Canary Media's dispatch from Lansing opens on a split-screen. On one side, LG Energy Solution is starting up one of the largest battery-cell plants in the United States. On the other, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum is there to claim the factory as proof of the president's energy agenda. The same administration, the outlet notes, has shown no enthusiasm for electric vehicles or clean energy. Battery cells serve both EV batteries and grid storage, so the factory is where those two attitudes meet.

The dispatch leaves out the numbers that would make sense of the moment: the plant's planned gigawatt-hours, LG's investment, the incentives it received, and the identities of the power and offtake holders. It also leaves out whether the cells are destined for electric vehicles, grid storage, or both — the end-market split an infrastructure investor would underwrite. The story is datelined Lansing, but offers no timeline for reaching full production. Those blanks are the underwriting file for an industrial asset priced over two decades.

The same day, across the grid

The split-screen widens with the day's other energy news. Private Infrastructure Daily's tracking shows the Department of Energy canceling three transmission corridors under the label 'Green New Scam.' The cancellations strip federal backing from lines once justified on reliability grounds. So the administration is celebrating a factory that needs electricity while deleting the pathways that would carry it. A cabinet official's applause does not reduce the interconnection queue.

Michigan's political weight likely explains the warmth. In a state built on internal combustion, the battery line offers the next round of factory jobs. But private capital does not respond to sentiment. It will price the plant on interconnection, the price of power, and the creditworthiness of whoever signs the offtake. The dispatch names no offtaker and no power price. Investors will have to find those elsewhere.
