Blue Earth raises $200M for impact secondaries with Walton LP support

The $200M second close puts Walton family money behind an effort to build a secondary market for impact investments.

At a glance

  1. The money came in at the vehicle's second close.
  2. The return target is market-rate, not concessionary.
  3. The second close drew Builders Vision, the investment and philanthropy platform founded by Lukas Walton; iAlumbra Capital, the investment arm of Christy Walton's family office; and Sonen Capital, a U.S. impact investment advisor.

Blue Earth Capital has raised more than $200 million for its first fund dedicated to impact secondaries, ESG Today reported. The money came in at the vehicle's second close. Blue Earth, founded in 2021, is betting that impact investors want a path into seasoned assets without the blind-pool, concentration, and duration risks of a fresh commitment.

The return target is market-rate, not concessionary. Blue Earth says secondaries also give existing investors a way to recycle capital into new impactful opportunities, a catalyst for growth across impact investing. The strategy invests globally in developed and emerging markets, targeting climate action, circular economy, financial inclusion, healthcare, and education. Blue Earth already runs private equity, private credit, and multi-asset solutions; the secondaries vehicle extends that lineup. A dedicated emerging-markets sleeve takes aim at a corner where secondary transactions have traditionally been scarce.

The second close drew Builders Vision, the investment and philanthropy platform founded by Lukas Walton; iAlumbra Capital, the investment arm of Christy Walton's family office; and Sonen Capital, a U.S. impact investment advisor. They join Proparco, the Ursimone Wietlisbach Foundation, and Stella, which anchored the first close. Jamey Spencer, head of private markets at Builders Vision, said the market needs infrastructure that lets capital move efficiently and brings in more participants.

The fund has deployed into Zunibal, a technology provider for fishing and marine monitoring, and into a GP-led continuation vehicle that took on two European climate impact assets. The continuation structure lets existing investors sell to new ones instead of waiting for a fund to wind down; it is common in traditional secondaries and still rare in impact.

Two Walton-backed vehicles now sit on the fund's LP list, a sign that large allocators are treating secondaries as a normal part of impact portfolio construction. The emerging-markets sleeve is a separate bet: that capital stuck in developing economies is an opportunity, not just a problem. If the strategy proves out, impact investors get something they have rarely had — a functional secondary market in both developed and emerging geographies.
