BlackRock launched the ACS World ESG Insights Protective Strategies Fund, aimed at UK pension schemes, which pairs global equity exposure with an options-based overlay intended to cushion significant market declines.
The fund targets defined contribution plans with members approaching retirement, BlackRock said. The firm argues that the standard de-risking route, lowering equity exposure, can limit long-term growth and increase inflation and longevity risk. The fee was not disclosed.
For advisers to DC schemes whose members are approaching retirement, the fund sets up a straight comparison with a conventional de-risking glide path: keep the equity allocation and carry the overlay's cost, or cut equities and accept less growth. The equity core is BlackRock's World ESG Insights strategy, which provides global equity exposure using the firm's proprietary sustainability insights, the firm said. The strategy includes an objective to reduce its carbon emissions intensity score and falls within the scope of BlackRock Investment Stewardship's Climate and Decarbonization Stewardship program, which means trustees buying the ESG label are relying on BlackRock's own methodology and stewardship.
Adam Ryan, head of diversified strategies at BlackRock, said the fund is meant to keep equity market growth potential while managing declines. "Traditionally, achieving downside protection often meant limiting participation in equity market gains. Our approach is different," he said.
