Anthropic hires Google's data center design chief to lead EMEA capacity

John M. Wilson spent six years at Google and previously ran European design and construction at Amazon.

At a glance

  1. On LinkedIn, Wilson wrote that leading global infrastructure delivery across data centers and subsea programs taught him how humbling scale is and how much disciplined, well-aligned teams can absorb without the machinery of complexity getting in the way; the new role, he added, carries stakes and scale higher than any he has worked at.
  2. The EMEA brief puts him alongside a widening group of Google alumni at the lab: Winnie Leung heads data center infrastructure, Brett Rogers came from data center construction, Liwen Mao is the design lead, and Adam Johnson took the electrical lead role in October after a decade at Google.
  3. Taken together, the hires span design, electrical systems, security engineering, operations, energy sourcing and compute finance, the functions an operator builds in-house when it means to commission its own capacity instead of renting it.

Anthropic has hired Google's head of global data center design and construction, John M. Wilson, to lead EMEA capacity delivery as a member of technical staff, Data Center Dynamics first reported. Wilson spent six years at the search and cloud group after running European design and construction at Amazon, and his earlier career ran through the British Army, where he was chief of staff, and NATO, where he directed infrastructure.

The EMEA brief puts him alongside a widening group of Google alumni at the lab: Winnie Leung heads data center infrastructure, Brett Rogers came from data center construction, Liwen Mao is the design lead, and Adam Johnson took the electrical lead role in October after a decade at Google. Peter Sarossy, a 20-year Google veteran, moved into data center security engineering in January, while Zach Miller left after 17 years to become data center operations manager and Scarlett Chen, previously an engineer working on advanced technology and innovation, became a member of technical staff. In April, Sana Ouji joined Anthropic's new energy team to scale its data center portfolio; Mike Brinker followed a month later on capacity delivery, and Asad Malik was named head of compute finance and strategy a month after that.

Taken together, the hires span design, electrical systems, security engineering, operations, energy sourcing and compute finance, the functions an operator builds in-house when it means to commission its own capacity instead of renting it. Whether that is Anthropic's intent is an inference; what the hires establish is a concentration on delivery, the portion of a data center program that money alone does not buy.

Europe is where delivery gets tested. Grid access has become a customer class rather than a queue, as this publication has reported, which puts a premium on people who have worked European interconnection from the inside—Wilson's Amazon years and his NATO post both sit in that experience. He is not the only Google infrastructure name picked up by a European AI lab in recent weeks: Mistral hired Google's energy lead in September for a 1GW push, as we reported at the time.

What the coverage does not yet name—a European site, a capacity figure, a counterparty—are the numbers an underwriter would ask for first. What is legible is the shape of the hiring, a developer's org chart and not a research lab's.
