Andel's $467m Ørsted exit carries a number and little else

Renewables Now reports the stake sale but not the buyer, the percentage sold, or the per-share price.

At a glance

  1. Beneath that number the coverage is thin: it does not identify the buyer, state the percentage of Ørsted changing hands, or say whether Andel has completed the disposal or only agreed to sell.
  2. The dollar figure is nonetheless a break from the pattern this publication has tracked: RenewableUK's £3bn offshore wind claim arrived without the arithmetic behind it, and a Texas hybrid project from Blacktail and RayGen named partners but no capacity, offtaker or price.
  3. The deal may be firm.

Renewables Now reports Sept. 9 that Andel has divested a stake in Ørsted sized at $467m, an item whose one distinguishing feature in the current energy tape is a number. Beneath that number the coverage is thin: it does not identify the buyer, state the percentage of Ørsted changing hands, or say whether Andel has completed the disposal or only agreed to sell.

The dollar figure is nonetheless a break from the pattern this publication has tracked: RenewableUK's £3bn offshore wind claim arrived without the arithmetic behind it, and a Texas hybrid project from Blacktail and RayGen named partners but no capacity, offtaker or price. Andel's exit at least quantifies the move, though a quantum is not a price; the coverage leaves unresolved what Andel receives per share of Ørsted, whether the stake is being placed privately or sold into the market, and what will happen to the proceeds.

For a desk that has argued the unpriced project is now the default announcement in renewables, those omissions are the real story: a stake sale becomes an infrastructure data point only when it can be measured against a return, and without the per-share price and counterparty the market cannot tell whether Andel is monetizing at a premium or funding a strategic shift. The deal may be firm. The transaction's economics remain opaque, and that opacity has become the norm in renewables coverage even when the headline finally carries a number.
