A blob-space scramble left Robinhood Chain's batches queued for 14 minutes

Robinhood Chain kept producing blocks while its Ethereum batches waited behind Base, leaving app users unaware of the settlement queue.

At a glance

  1. The Defiant reports the episode, and the mechanics matter more than the word outage: Robinhood Chain's own blocks never stopped, but the queue for Ethereum's temporary data space briefly did not have room for them.
  2. Blobs are the data packets layer-2 networks use to submit compressed transaction batches to Ethereum, the channel through which anyone can reconstruct a rollup's history and through which funds can move back to Ethereum.
  3. Base's blocks filled at 12:30 UTC and its batcher began posting to Ethereum four times as often, pushing Ethereum's blocks to their 21-blob ceiling and driving the blob base fee up 27-fold in half an hour.

The easiest place to watch a rollup fail is the queue that posts its batches to Ethereum, and Friday a surge of activity on Base crowded Robinhood Chain out of that queue for roughly 14 minutes. Blobs are the data packets layer-2 networks use to submit compressed transaction batches to Ethereum, the channel through which anyone can reconstruct a rollup's history and through which funds can move back to Ethereum. Robinhood Chain, according to The Defiant, buys more of that blob space than any other network.

Base's blocks filled at 12:30 UTC and its batcher began posting to Ethereum four times as often, pushing Ethereum's blocks to their 21-blob ceiling and driving the blob base fee up 27-fold in half an hour. Robinhood Chain's batch poster went silent from 12:29:47 to 12:38:23 — 8 minutes 36 seconds — and again from 12:42:47 to 12:48:11, before quadrupling its fee bid to get back in. The network kept producing blocks throughout, 106,756 between 12:00 and 15:00 UTC, one every 101 milliseconds on average according to The Defiant's count from Blockscout. Traders in the Robinhood app saw nothing.

Robinhood Chain responded at 2:19 p.m. New York time, after X posts had claimed it stopped producing blocks for about 14 minutes, that it experienced no downtime and that direct user transactions saw no delays; the impact instead fell on infrastructure providers relying on the chain's data stream, which felt "a brief performance impact due to a high number of feed subscribers." The Defiant notes Robinhood has published no technical account of the incident and lists no status page in its documentation.

A rollup can look perfectly healthy inside its own app while its batches wait behind another network's bid in Ethereum's fee market — Friday, the largest buyer of that data space was the one left waiting. That is the distinction institutions need to watch: the batch line into Ethereum, not the block explorer, reveals a chain's health. Until someone publishes a status page for that queue, a smooth app is not the right proof of health. It matters as Robinhood's CEO Tenev pushes the SEC to open the US to tokenized stocks, because the tokenized market structure Washington is being asked to bless rests on the same rented data capacity.
