A 200-MWh Colorado battery gets its first named lender

A bank's name moves the project past intent, but only the loan amount and offtake will show whether the bank underwrote the battery's revenue.

At a glance

  1. The outlet's own subscription copy beneath it carries no loan amount, tenor, pricing or offtake counterparty; the lender's name is the most informative term in the deal.
  2. Against that run, a bank's name on a project loan is a different kind of fact, because a project finance group prices a model before it wires.
  3. The view from this quarter's energy announcements is that a milestone without a price is a statement of intent until an offtake and a coupon surface.

Renewables Now reported on Sept. 14 that Nord/LB is lending into a 200-megawatt-hour battery in Colorado, with Cloudbreak on the borrower side, and that headline is nearly the whole disclosure. The outlet's own subscription copy beneath it carries no loan amount, tenor, pricing or offtake counterparty; the lender's name is the most informative term in the deal.

This publication spent September tracking the opposite kind of announcement: Alcazar closed 131 megawatts of wind financing with no price, offtake, or lender attached, the Blacktail-RayGen hybrid arrived with partners and a state but no capacity, and Andel's Ørsted exit carried $467 million and no buyer. Against that run, a bank's name on a project loan is a different kind of fact, because a project finance group prices a model before it wires. Nord/LB's participation suggests a contracted revenue stack behind the battery that the coverage does not show — an inference from the lender's presence, not a disclosed term.

The view from this quarter's energy announcements is that a milestone without a price is a statement of intent until an offtake and a coupon surface. Nord/LB moves this project one notch along that line, because someone outside the developer has underwritten the asset, which says more than a capacity figure does, but it does not settle the economics. The loan's size against the project's cost is the term that separates a bank underwriting the battery's revenue from one underwriting the borrower's credit, and neither the amount nor the revenue contract appears in the coverage.

The gap is narrower than the quarter's usual one. Storage announcements have mostly arrived with a capacity figure and a state and nothing about who is paying for them, while here the payer is identified and only the terms are missing. Whether the facility is senior or spans the whole stack is another question the coverage leaves open.

Watch the loan amount and the offtake, in that order. Until both surface, Nord/LB's name is the only evidence in the file that anyone outside the developer has put a number on this battery.
